Moist to dry soils, full to part sun. Best in gravelly or sandy, moist sunny areas. 3-10’ (usually 3-4 ft) spreading shrub. Host for many butterflies. Bees and flies find early nectar; birds will feed on buds and catkins; many birds will nest in shrubby growth.
